Wayne Rooney stunned by Jack Grealish’s England snub as Manchester United legend claims Aston Villa not at the standard he is

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has labelled Jack Grealish’s recent omission from the England squad ‘shocking’ after his exploits for Aston Villa last season.

Grealish is once again a big topic of debate after the Villa captain was left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming Nations League games against Iceland and Denmark.

Many expected the 24-year-old to feature after his brilliant season for Villa and helping the club, almost singlehandedly at times, stay in the Premier League.

Southgate picked Phil Foden and Mason Mount as his attacking midfielders instead, a decision that Rooney can’t get his head around.

“It’s very surprising. The season he had he was outstanding,” Rooney told talkSPORT Breakfast.

“I’ve been there when I was a young player at Everton and the team probably weren’t to the standard I was. And I think that’s where Jack is at now – Aston Villa are not at the standard of the player he is.

“I can’t work it out why’s he’s not in the squad – I have no idea. He should be in that squad.

“Even if he is just in the squad to train and you just bring him on for ten minutes to see his character and see how he reacts to it. It was shocking that he wasn’t in the squad.”

Rooney’s beloved United have reportedly not given up hope of signing the Aston Villa playmaker this summer.

The Mail claim the Red Devils are weighing up a bid for the midfielder, who is valued at £75million by the Midlands club.

Grealish was a standout performer for the Villans as they successfully beat the drop in 2019/20, scoring eight goals and contributing six assists in 36 outings.
