Five academy graduates to start – How Manchester United could line up against Brighton in the Carabao Cup
Manchester United may have managed to get their 3-2 win over Brighton on Saturday but they will certainly have learnt a lesson or two.
The Red Devils should have come off second best in the contest and will now face the Seagulls again, this time in the Carabao Cup – live on talkSPORT, from 7:45pm.
With the Champions League soon to start, rotation is the aim of the game for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
He might want silverware but in truth he needs to get fringe stars, new signings, and academy players up to speed and match fit, ready to slot into the first XI when needed.
We saw a similar approach against Luton last week, with the Red Devils claiming a 3-0 win, although late goals from regular starters Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood were needed to help them get over the line.
Luke Shaw believes rotation is vital for the United squad.
“Of course it’s a competition we want to win, but I think it gives the manager that opportunity to give chances to other players that are on the bench and on the fringe, who are training very hard to get chances,” Shaw told MUTV.
“I think that’s something those younger players need to smell and know with this manager that they’re going to get a chance.
“They’re always working hard, always pushing themselves and I think they know they’ll get a chance if they keep working. Hopefully we can see some more youngsters on Wednesday and they can show what they can do.”
But given the scare they received at the Amex Stadium last time will Solskjaer really risk an under-strength team as pressure mounts?
Manchester United team news
When it comes to injuries, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are absent once again.
Dean Henderson is set to come in for David de Gea again as they battle for the No.1 jersey at Old Trafford, while Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Eric Bailly and Brandon Williams should get a chance too.
Scott McTominay and Fred are likely to partner in midfield with new signing Donny van de Beek getting a start too.
The front three of Jesse Lingard, Odion Ighalo and Juan Mata could continue as well.
