FC Copenhagen concede hilarious own goal as they crash out of Europa League, Harry Kane hat-trick sends Tottenham through to group stages
Sometimes goals come along that you just have to laugh at.
Rijeka’s goal against FC Copenhagen in Thursday night’s Europa League qualifier is certainly one of them.
It’s comedy error after comedy error with Peter Ankersen putting into his own net after 20 minutes.
The visitors were on the break but plenty of Copenhagen defenders were converging on the attacker.
The Danish club’s last man attempted a tackle and inadvertedly took out his own man.
Franko Andrijašević’s fine effort hit the bar but a rushing back Ankersen accidentally put the ball into his own net.
To be fair to the Copenhagen defender, there was nothing he could really do about it.
Croatian club Rijeka went on to win the Europa League play-off match to make it through to the group stage.
Elsewhere in the Europa League, Tottenham qualified for the group stage with ease thanks to a 7-2 win against Maccabi Haifa.
Harry Kane put them ahead after just two minutes with Lucas Moura scoring and Giovani Lo Celso netting twice in the first half.
Kane then went on to score two more in the second half to complete his hat-trick while Dele Alli scored a 91st minute penalty on his return to the side.
Celtic also progressed to the group stage with a 1-0 win against Sarajevo thanks to Odsonne Edouard’s goal.
