Manchester United transfer target Kalidou Koulibaly can emulate Virgil van Dijk if he moves amid mounting rumours, talkSPORT told

Manchester United target Kalidou Koulibaly would automatically improve any team in the Premier League, talkSPORT’s Ally McCoist believes.

The Senegal centre-back is one of the finest players in the game and has been linked with a move to England for a number of years.

He has, however, ended up staying at Napoli where he still has three years to run on his current contract.

Recent reports claim Koulibaly could finally make a move to England after the Serie A club failed to qualify for Champions League football.

A disappointing season saw Napoli finish seventh in the table, and it is claimed the centre-back is keen to move on this summer after six years in Naples.

Manchester United are known to be keen as they look to bolster their defence while rivals Man City have tracked him too.

Interested clubs have been told by Napoli that they have lowered their £80million asking price and are now willing to accept a fee in the region of £65m.

And McCoist has told talkSPORT all of the Premier League big guns should be chasing Koulibaly’s signature, saying he can make an impact similar to the one Virgil van Dijk made when the Dutchman signed for Liverpool in 2018.

“The key signing for Liverpool was Van Dijk, and I think [that position] is so important for a number of top clubs,” the Rangers legend said on the talkSPORT Breakfast.

“In that I include Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Man City definitely need to strengthen in the centre-back position and I also think Manchester United need to strengthen there.

“I think Harry Maguire has done fine, but there’s a question mark over Lindelof and you certainly need strength in depth.

“The name I keep going back to is the lad Koulibaly at Napoli, who has impressed for a long, long time now.

“I don’t know whether there have been moves to try and get him out of Napoli, or whether he’s happy there, the big Senegalese defender.

“But I think he is the one target a lot of top Premier League clubs would and should be looking at.”
