Manchester United told to sign Harry Kane to challenge for Premier League title by ex-assistant Meulensteen who believes Paul Pogba will stay despite Donny van de Beek transfer

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen believes signing Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur would ensure the Red Devils challenge for the Premier League title.

United on Wednesday completed the signing of Donny van de Beek from Ajax in a deal which could rise to £40million.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly also keen on signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, while RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano has also been linked.

Closing the gap on rivals Manchester City and Liverpool will be of huge importance to the Norwegian, having secured Champions League football and taken United to the Europa League semi-finals last term.

Yet Meulensteen, who served as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Old Trafford between 2007 and 2013, believes the signing of a top class striker should now be Solskjaer’s priority.

“Obviously, there was a big, big gap there last year,” Meulensteen told Jim White on talkSPORT. “And I think the gap started sort of in the early part of the season.

“What is vitally important is that United are going to have a really good start to the season so they don’t lose any ground, they are in there and they keep competing.

“Because that will grow the belief.

“I think we are maybe another good signing away; I keep saying they should bring in a really top, top striker.

“I think, for instance, if you were able to get Kane – I don’t think they would be able to get him – I would say yes, they will compete for the title next year.”

The signing of Van de Beek, who has been compared to Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, was heralded by many top European experts – with United legend Edwin van der Sar even giving the 23-year-old his blessing.

But Danny Murphy warned fans he felt as though the signing of the Netherlands international would effectively spell the end of Paul Pogba’s second stint at Old Trafford.

However, Meulensteen, who also was in charge of the United reserve team, believes the World Cup winner could well stay in Manchester.

He added: “I can see where Danny is coming from, in terms of playing basically three attacking-minded midfield players in one midfield.

Danny Murphy thinks Paul Pogba will leave Man United if the club sign Donny van de Beek from Ajax

“In certain games, you can get away with it because good footballers will always find a way to play with each other.

“But if you come up against stronger opposition, then they will leave themselves short defensively because they are all not really defensive-minded players.

“I can see where Danny comes from, so to insinuate does that mean Paul Pogba is gone? I’m not too sure.

“I think there has been so many speculations over the past two seasons, when it came to the end of last season it became a bit more obvious that Ole made it clear he wanted to keep Pogba. I’m not too sure whether he will go.”
