Liverpool ‘desperately’ need to sign Thiago and other quality players after Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, says Darren Bent

Liverpool’s Community Shield defeat to Arsenal at Wembley Stadium proves Jurgen Klopp MUST strengthen this team with new signings this summer.

That’s according to Darren Bent, who believes the Reds could suffer this season if they fail to bring in reinforcements.

Liverpool have now lost the season curtain raiser for the second campaign in a row, as the Premier League champions were beaten by FA Cup winners Arsenal on penalties on Saturday.

Takumi Minamino got Liverpool back in it with his first Reds goal in the second-half, cancelling out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s superb curling finish that handed the Gunners an early lead.

But, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane looking out of sorts, Bent believes Liverpool will fall behind rivals Manchester City this season if they only really have Minamino to rely on from the bench.

Liverpool have been linked with Watford’s Ismaila Sarr and Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara, but so far Konstantinos Tsimikas is their only new recruit.

The former Premier League striker has questioned why the club has not yet wrapped up the signing of Thiago, saying they are ‘desperate’ for a player of his quality in their tired squad ahead of a packed season.

“The thing is with Liverpool, 1 to 11 they’ve got a very good team and deservedly won the Premier League… but they haven’t added to it,” Bent said on Monday’s talkSPORT Breakfast.

“You’ve got Thiago, I would have thought that would be a transfer Liverpool would have desperately done!

“Watching Liverpool against Arsenal, to me in certain areas they looked really tied, so I think Jurgen Klopp needs to address that sooner rather than later.

“I’ve heard people say ‘how can you improve on that 11… who can you bring in to make them better?’

“Well, I just think they need more strength in depth.

“If you look at Manchester City, if Raheem Sterling is not playing well, they can replace him with Riyad Mahrez or Bernardo Silva – there’s no real drop off in quality.

“But you’re not telling me that when Salah is not playing well and they bring on Minamino, the levels are too different.

“I know Minamino scored at the weekend and it was his first Liverpool goal, but for me he is nowhere near the player Salah is!”
