Khabib’s coach confirms rematch with Conor McGregor WILL happen – even if it means sacrificing Georges St-Pierre super-fight
Khabib Nurmagomedov’s trainer has given the clearest indication yet the Dagestani destroyer will face bitter rival Conor McGregor again in a rematch.
The Russian mauled ‘The Notorious’ back in 2018 when they fought for the lightweight title – prompting the 32-year-old to retire from MMA twice.
Although McGregor briefly returned in January of this year when he destroyed Donald Cerrone in just 40 seconds, he lasted just six months before calling time on his career again.
Khabib and McGregor faced off in October 2018 for the UFC lightweight title
UFC chief Dana White is hopeful the former two-weight world champion can reverse his decision and return to the octagon and Javier Mendez believes a fight with his pupil Khabib is what makes most financial sense.
Speaking to The Express, Mendez said: “If I’m the UFC and I’m the president, I’m not going to let that fight off the table.
“Especially if Conor wants to fight and Khabib is still the champion. Then you can make that fight.
“I wouldn’t let them [not fight]. That’s my job, right? To make the most money for the company.”
The first fight ended in a submission win and a brawl in the T-Mobile Arena
‘The Eagle’ will defend his title against number one contender Justin Gaethje on October 24 and has told McGregor to defeat Dustin Poirier if he wants the chance to avenge his loss at UFC 229.
Although the 28-0 superstar has openly discussed his desire to face Hall of Fame legend Georges St-Pierre, Mendez admitted the fight against McGregor would lure in more viewers and more money.
“Let’s put it this way: If that [fight with McGregor] makes the most money out of anybody, then that means it’s the most interesting fight people want to see,” he added.
“Obviously I would think everybody still wants to see that fight. Otherwise, why would they pay for it. That’s why I think the UFC would do that.”
