Julian Draxler to Leeds: How Marcelo Bielsa’s side could line up if they land World Cup-winning Paris Saint-Germain ace
Leeds United are making waves in the transfer market this summer and their latest target is a World Cup winner.
Marcelo Bielsa reportedly wants Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Julian Draxler.
Draxler, who won the tournament with Germany in 2014, has been with PSG for three-and-a-half years but he’s not a key player – making only 22 appearances last season.
And with Paris chiefs willing to let Draxler go this summer to free up space in their wage bill, interested clubs are preparing to swoop for him.
According to RMC, Leeds are one such interested party as Marcelo Bielsa hopes to further strengthen his squad ahead of the Whites‘ first Premier League match in 16 years.
Draxler was once one of the most highly-rated young players in Europe and was named as the Bundesliga’s young player of the year for the 2013/14 season.
Landing the 26-year-old would be a big coup for newly promoted Leeds.
Bielsa has already brought in Rodrigo from Valencia in a £27million and is likely to go straight into the starting line-up in place of Patrick Bamford.
The Whites also wanted to bring back Ben White following his successful loan spell with the club last season.
Brighton were unwilling to sell, though, and rejected three bids with the final offer believed to be around £25m.
The Seagulls eventually signed White to a new long-term contract.
A new centre-back was added in Germany international Robin Koch, who cost £13m from Freiburg.
How Leeds could look with Draxler this season
Draxler signing could possibly mean fewer minutes for 35-year-old fan favourite Pablo Hernandez.
He is entering his fifth season at the club and has been a real driving force behind their rise back to the Premier League.
Draxler plays in a similar position and could play alongside Mateusz Klich in midfield.
Bielsa has favoured a 4-1-4-1 formation while at Leeds with Rodrigo likely to play as the lone striker.
Jack Harrison and Helder Costa were impressive in the Championship on the wings with Kalvin Phillips occupying the defensive midfield position.
The back four is well set with Koch taking White’s position from last season alongside Stuart Dallas, Liam Cooper and Luke Ayling.
