Boxing news: Gervonta Davis reveals realistic date when he believes Vasyl Lomachenko fight will happen
Gervonta Davis has declared that he believes a fight with Vasyl Lomachenko could materialise in 2022.
The young American star has been linked with a mouthwatering showdown against Ukraine’s pound-for-pound sensation since he burst onto the scene in 2017.
Three-and-a-half years ago, ‘Tank’ stopped Jose Pedraza to claim the IBF super-featherweight belt and fans called for a unification with established WBO champion Loma.
However, as he was just 22 years old and Lomachenko was 28, Davis’ promoter Floyd Mayweather insisted they were in no hurry to make that fight against the experienced technician in his prime.
Mayweather stated at the time: “We’re not rushing. We’re not thinking about Lomachenko.
“Lomachenko’s with Top Rank. Let him stay over there with Top Rank. That’s where he’s at.
“My guy’s gonna do his job and I’m gonna make sure I do my job to the best of my ability, to get what he want.”
Similar responses have followed since.
Davis is now approaching his prime at 25, while Loma is 32. Still though, the fight won’t happen yet.
Gervonta told the Last Stand podcast: “Lomachenko? If we get past our guys that we got ahead of us, then we can make it rock.
“I think it’s probably time. Definitely not this year.
“If not next year, then 2022. I believe at the beginning of 2022 we can make it happen.”
He went on to clarify the reason why the fight hasn’t happened as yet: “It’s not me. It’s definitely not me.
“If it was up to me to fight Lomachenko, we’d be fighting on this phone right now.
“It’s not me, it’s just politics and coming to the right agreement.”
If Gervonta and Loma fight were to fight early 2022, the American would be hitting his prime at 27, while the Ukrainian would be 34.
