UFC president Dana White says Jon Jones WILL get title match on his heavyweight debut

The Jon Jones saga appeared as if it wasn’t going to have a happy ending for a while, but it seems like he’s going to get what he wants after all.

The light-heavyweight legend relinquished his 205lbs title last week and finally declared that he is interested in competing at heavyweight, but he wanted to be compensated for the jump.

After UFC initially rebuffed his request, Jones revealed the two parties had positive talks last week and now it seems there is a heavyweight fight in his future.

However, it won’t be for the title until Francis Ngannou has had a shot at Stipe Miocic.

The Cameroonian brute has secured four first-round knockouts against top contenders since losing two straight to Miocic, in his one and only title shot, and then Derrick Lewis – and UFC president Dana White says Ngannou is next in line.

Eddie Hearn doesn’t think that he could promote Conor McGregor even if he is retired from UFC

However, speaking at his UFC Contender Series, White did confirm that Jones will get a shot at the title when he debuts at heavyweight.

“Of course,” White told reporters after Tuesday Night Contender Series. “I mean realistically, Jon Jones is undefeated. He’s never been beat. [Steve] Mazzagatti’s been out of the game for years. I don’t mean to keep beating this guy up, but you know. Jon Jones is undefeated.”

It seems that White is suggesting Jones will simply sit out until Ngannou has had his shot against Miocic, and then Bones will fight the winner of that bout.

“Last time we talked to Jon Jones,” continued White, “Jon Jones said he was going to take some time and do his things he’s into right now and take some time, and when there’s a right fight, he’ll give us a call.”

It makes the world of sense that Jones would be jettisoned into a top spot like that.

After all, he’s arguably the greatest mixed martial artist of all-time and a draw in his own right.

When will Miocic and Ngannou clash? Best money says at the very close of 2020 or early 2021, so perhaps Jones’ heavyweight debut is around a year from now.
