Reading’s next manager: Veljko Paunovic appointed as new Royals boss with Mark Bowen set to revert back to previous role
Reading have appointed ex-Chicago Fire manager Serbian Veljko Paunovic as their new boss.
Paunovic, 43, has been out of management since a four-year spell at MLS outfit Chicago Fire came to an end in November 2019.
As we first reported earlier this week, the Serbian will take over the Championship side from Mark Bowen.
Royals owner Dai Yongge said: “With vast experience of top flight football as both a player and a coach across Europe and in the United States, and with proven pedigree of successfully working with young up-and-coming footballers on both the domestic and international scene, I am confident Veljko can help take this club forward.
“This has been a process and this appointment has been made only after long, careful consideration. After meeting with him, we found Veljko to be an exceptional candidate who impressed us immediately. I am sure he is the right man for Reading Football Club. I’m delighted he has agreed to sign as our new manager.”
Bowen, who took charge of Reading in a friendly against Tottenham on Friday, will revert back to his original role as director of football.
Paunovic has a strong track record of developing young players and is regarded as a good young coach.

talkSPORT further understands Reading are set to make six to eight new signings to support the expected appointment of Paunovic, as they bid to make a return to the Premier League.
They completed the signing of Ovie Ejaria from Liverpool on Friday. The midfielder made his Madejski Stadium move permanent following two loan spells there.
Welcoming Ejaria was one of Bowen’s final acts as Reading boss.
“Naturally, everybody at the club is delighted to have got this transfer over the line and it is a deal our owner, Mr Dai (Dai Yongge), was very keen to see completed as soon as was possible,” Bowen told the club website.
“Ovie has shown everyone his exceptional quality in the time he has spent here on loan and I’m sure all our supporters are excited to see him continue to impress as a Royal during the course of the next four years.”
