Guardiola could not believe it and fell to his knees as things immediately got worse for his side.

Just 59 seconds later, Lyon went up the other end to score their third goal as Moussa Dembele tapped home after Ederson spilled a Houssem Aouar shot.

The French club took a 24th-minute lead through Maxwel Cornet as City struggled to break down a resilient defence.

Guardiola’s men showed signs of improvement in the second-half and were level thanks to Kevin De Bruyne when he fired in a Sterling cut-back.

But City were behind once more as substitute Dembele beat City’s high line to slot the ball past Ederson.

City should have taken the match to extra-time as Sterling’s miss proved costly when Demebele completed his brace three minutes from time.

It is the third successive season that City have crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

Now, Lyon will take on Bayern Munich, while Paris Saint-Germain face RB Leipzig in the Champions League semi-finals.
