Newcastle interested in signing Manchester United outcast Chris Smalling after successful loan spell with Roma
Newcastle want to sign Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, reports claim.
The 30-year-old made 37 appearances in a successful loan spell with Roma in the 2019/20 campaign.
He has two years left on his United contract, but finds himself behind Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe in the pecking order.
Sky Sports claim Newcastle boss Steve Bruce is looking to ‘buy British’ this summer and Smalling is in his sights.
It is understood the Magpies will be working on a limited transfer budget after a £300million Saudi-led takeover fell through.
Earlier this month, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggested Smalling would stay at Old Trafford next season.
He said: “I think Chris has shown over his career at Man United how valuable he is for Man United.
“This season was about him being a regular, going to Roma, showing and proving how good a centre-back he is.
“I wanted to give Harry, Vic, maybe Axel a chance, so we found out that was the best for him to go to Roma, play for a year.
“Now he’s coming back and Chris has shown this season that he will be valuable. I’ve been speaking to Chris throughout and been delighted with his season.”
