Sadly, Armstrong, 80, had been dealing with bone cancer for some time and it eventually spread to his ribs, shoulder and prostate.

WWE.com also confirmed his death and paid tribute to the late star’s in-ring work.

A statement read: “Armstrong, however, didn’t rest on his laurels when he was between the ropes.

“He handled himself well in the rough-and-tumble southeastern territories by employing an assortment of holds and moves, including his feared sleeper and Georgia Jawbreaker.

“He also possessed the gift of grappling gab, giving him the uncanny ability to wear down a rival with his words as well as with his strength.”

Armstrong was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011 by his four sons. Joseph Scott (aka Scott Armstrong), Robert Bradley (aka Brad Armstrong), Steve and Brian Girard (aka Road Dogg) all became wrestlers.

After making his debut in 1960, Armstrong had his final match in 2019 meaning his career stretched a phenomenal 59 years.

In that time, he battled the very best the business had to offer in the shape of Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Roddy Piper and many more.

Many big names in the world of professional wrestling have paid tribute to the ‘Bullet’ on social media since his passing, including Triple H, CM Punk, Mick Foley and Chris Jericho.

Jericho said: “Sad to hear of the passing of #BulletBobArmstrong…a true man’s man in this sport of thieves. When I broke my arm in #SMW in 94, Bob was one of the ONLY ones to call & check on me. I also learned the art of cutting a promo from him. Rest well Bullet!”

Armstrong is survived by his boys after his wife, Vida Gail James, passed away in June. Our thoughts are with the Armstrong family.
