Chelsea preparing transfer raid for Declan Rice but will not meet West Ham’s £80m valuation
Chelsea could push their summer spending to over £250million with the club ready to push for the signing of West Ham’s Declan Rice.
Frank Lampard has splashed the cash this summer, building an impressive new-look squad with the arrivals of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell for a combined £131.3m.
The Blues are also set to confirm the signing of German wonderkid Kai Havertz in the coming days in a deal that could be worth around £90m, while Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr have joined in free transfers.
And the manager isn’t planning to stop there, with Rice next on his wanted list.
According to The Sun, Rice is valued at £80m by West Ham.
Chelsea are said to be preparing an offer, but one significantly lower than the Hammers’ asking price.
Leicester City had demanded £70m for England left-back Chilwell before eventually settling for a deal rising to £50m, and the Blues hope they can get a similar discount on Rice.
Rice is a key figure in David Moyes’ team, a versatile star who can play in both defence and midfield and is a proven leader on the field, having worn the captain’s armband in Mark Noble’s stead on numerous occasions.
But the Hammers boss is desperate to improve his squad after a poor season and knows he must sell before he buys.
Moyes is reportedly keen to offload Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini to raise some cash for new signings.
However, there is limited interest in the two under-performing forwards, and there is a sense that cashing in on Rice may be his only option.
Like Moyes, Lampard rates Rice highly and believes the youngster will thrive alongside the vastly experienced Thiago Silva in the Blues’ backline.
