Man City vs Liverpool fixture confirmed for Etihad Stadium with Premier League title almost wrapped up

Man City vs Liverpool will take place at the Etihad Stadium after being given the green light by Manchester council’s safety advisory group.

The Reds will be crowned top-flight champions for the first time in 30 years if City fail to beat Chelsea on Thursday evening.

But should Pep Guardiola’s men win at Stamford Bridge, it will give Liverpool the chance to claim the Premier League crown by beating their rivals in their own back yard next week.

There were suggestions the clash could be played at a neutral venue amid fears Reds fans would congregate outside the Etihad to celebrate their team’s potential title triumph.

However, SAG met on Thursday and has ‘no objections’ to holding the match at the Etihad.

Councillor Luthfur Rahman, executive member for skills, culture and leisure for Manchester City Council, said: “The Council’s Safety Advisory Group (SAG) for the Etihad Stadium met this morning to review the upcoming fixture between Manchester City and Liverpool.

“Following the most recent round of Premier League fixtures which have all taken place behind closed doors, the SAG has signalled it has no objections to the above fixture taking place at the Etihad Stadium as planned at 8.15pm, Thursday, July 2.

“As with all other Premier League matches this fixture will take place behind closed doors, with no fans present.”

Liverpool took another step towards the Premier League title with a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

Goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, Fabinho and Sadio Mane further emphasised the club’s dominance under Jurgen Klopp this season.

Asked where he would prefer to play Man City, Klopp said: “Honestly, I would prefer it is at Manchester otherwise it would be really difficult to organise it.

”I don’t know how it would be but it would not be in Liverpool so it would mean we both have to go somewhere where we both need a hotel. That is the only issue.

“Apart from that we play where they send us to but I would prefer it in Manchester.

“I don’t know about the process, I wait until the final information is confirmed whether it is Manchester or not. It would be a challenge for both clubs.”
