Ally McCoist says Manchester City’s David Silva deserves to be regarded as one of the greatest Premier League midfielders of all time.
The Spaniard has already confirmed this season will be his last at the Etihad Stadium and he will leave at the end of his contract in the summer.
Silva has spent a glorious ten years at Manchester City – in 424 appearances he has scored 74 goals and totalled 137 assists, helping the club to four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups.
It was widely expected he will return to his homeland to see out his career, but there are reports he could become the new face of David Beckham’s new Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.
And McCoist believes he should leave the English game as a legend, in the same bracket as Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, Chelsea hero Frank Lampard and Manchester United’s Paul Scholes.
“He has been absolutely fantastic for the Premier League, and the Premier League has been good for him,” the Scot said on the talkSPORT Breakfast.
“But what a ten years, it’s flown by!
“For me, he optimises the class and quality of a modern day footballer, I think he’s genius, I really do.”
Would be put the City star in the category of one of the greatest Premier League midfielders of all time?
“I think you’ve got to, I really think you’ve got to.
“Does he deserve to be in that company, with Stevie Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes and these boys?
“Absolutely, without a doubt!”
