Liverpool have reportedly become the latest Premier League club to register interest in signing Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Senegal international has been linked with a move to Manchester United repeatedly in recent years, but the Italian club have so far managed to fend off the interest to keep him at the San Paolo.

Koulibaly has established himself as one of the finest centre-backs on the planet since his move from Genk in 2014, making 173 Serie A appearances for Napoli.

In recent weeks speculation has again begun to swirl about the future of the 28-year-old, with FOUR Premier League sides – Arsenal, United, Newcastle and Everton – said to be tracking the player.

And, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool have now joined the race for the defender.

However, Napoli will only sell their most prized asset for a fee of around £90million.

The report suggests Jurgen Klopp will offer Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren to the Italian club in a swap deal in a bid to lower their asking price.

Matip and Lovren have been in and out of the first team this term due to the brilliant form of Joe Gomez, who has emerged as Virgil van Dijk’s preferred partner in central defence.

Newcastle have also been linked with a move for Koulibaly as the Magpies seek to kick off their new era of Saudi ownership with a marquee signing, while Everton are said to be interested as Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti looks to reunite with the player.

“Koulibaly is the best centre-back in the world – and he has more room for improvement,” Ancelotti told The Independent when both men were still at Napoli. “He is worth £130million and he is non-transferable.”
