In the hopes of reducing the spread of coronavirus, Hong Kong International Airport has started trialling several new technologies.
The airport has enlisted the help of robotic cleaners, while passengers will also use full-body disinfection booths.
Steven Yiu, Deputy Director, Service Delivery of the Hong Kong Airport Authority (AA), said: “The safety and wellbeing of airport staff and passengers are always our first priority.
“Although air traffic has been impacted by the pandemic, the AA spares no effort in ensuring that the airport is a safe environment for all users.
“We will continue to look into new measures to enhance our cleaning and disinfection work.”
Passengers will have their temperature taken before entering the ‘CLeanTech’ booths, which take just 40 seconds to kill viruses.
The interior surface of the booth is equipped with an antimicrobial coating that can remotely kill viruses and bacteria on the human body and clothing.
A report about the technology explained: “Sanitising spray is also applied for instant disinfection. The channel is kept under negative pressure to prevent cross-contamination between the outside and inside environment.”
The airport is also trialling applying antimicrobial coatings at all passenger facilities.
The report added: “An invisible coating to destroy germs, bacteria and viruses is applied to high-touch surfaces in the terminal, including handles and seats of Automated People Movers and passenger buses, smart check-in kiosks and check-in counters, toilets, seating area in the terminal, baggage trolleys, elevator buttons, and more.”
Meanwhile, the airport has also enlisted the help of autonomous cleaning robots.
The robots are equipped with a UV light steriliser and air steriliser, and are being used in the airport toilets, as well as in key operating areas.
According tot he report, the robots can sterilise up to 99.99% of bacteria in their vicinity in just 10 minutes.
The trial is currently underway, and if it proves a success, the disinfection measures could become permanent.
