Heurelho Gomes says Watford ‘cannot afford’ to lose Troy Deeney in fight to avoid relegation from Premier League
Heurelho Gomes says Watford cannot afford to be without captain Troy Deeney for the remainder of the Premier League season.
Deeney, 31, has not been training with the Hornets over concerns of spreading coronavirus to his family, including his newly-born son who has experienced breathing difficulties.
Deeney is incredibly sceptical about the Premier League’s Project Restart and has decided to stay away from training
On Wednesday, the Premier League confirmed that all 20 top flight clubs had voted unanimously to resume contact training with the aim of restarting the 2019-20 campaign in mid-June.
And while veteran shot-stopper Gomes recognises Deeney’s reasons for not wanting to participate in training, he said he is essential in the Hornets’ relegation fight.
“Of course Troy has his reasons, because he has someone at home, especially his son, of course he needs to look after him,” the Brazilian told Sky Sports.
“We are checking and creating a safe environment around the club, I believe it is very safe for us to be there.
Simon Jordan has his say on Troy Deeney’s refusal to return to Watford training over COVID-19 fears
“We cannot afford to lose a player like Troy Deeney.
“Of course, we’ve got other players that can fill this gap, but the problem is they’re not the same because he’s been at the club for the last ten years, we need him and we need everybody to be on board.”
