‘Frank Lampard is calling Dries Mertens almost every day’ as Chelsea close in on Napoli star
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is so desperate to sign Napoli star Dries Mertens that he’s calling the forward ‘almost every day’.
This is according to transfer intermediary Vincenzo Morabito, who claims Lampard is ready to pounce on Mertens when he becomes a free agent in the summer.
The Belgium international is the joint-top scorer in Napoli’s history with 121 strikes to his name but is understood to have fallen out with club president Aurelio de Laurentiis.
Multiple clubs have been linked with the 32-year-old, who has twelve goals and six assists in 29 appearances for the Italian side this term.
Newcastle have been linked with him due to the impending takeover of the club but it seems Lampard is going the extra mile to bring Mertens to Stamford Bridge.
Morabito told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, per Goal: “Mertens had originally said he wanted to stay at Napoli, but then his lawyer started offering him to various international clubs, meaning something changed between the player and the Azzurri.
“I know this because I was working on the Olivier Giroud issue when he was meant to leave Chelsea in January, with a lucrative contract lined up for Mertens.
“Chelsea have now extended Giroud’s contract as a precaution, but they are very interested in Mertens and Lampard is calling him almost every day. I can see Mertens going to Chelsea.”
Chelsea had made an enquiry over his availability during the final days of the January transfer window.
The Blues will want to add another striker to their ranks alongside Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi. Olivier Giroud is expected to leave, even though the club opted to extend the Frenchman’s contract through till 2021.
