Gareth Bale recreates iconic strike against Liverpool in Champions League as Real Madrid star attempts ‘2.6 challenge’ for NHS

Gareth Bale recreated arguably the greatest goal of his career in his living room in an attempt to raise money for charity.

The Real Madrid star scored an incredible overhead kick against Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final.

Showing excellent acrobatics, the Welshman got on the end of Marcelo’s cross from the left to put Madrid 2-1 up in Kiev.

He then got another goal to seal the win, although Bale mainly has Loris Karius to thank for that as the goalkeeper spilled his long-range effort into the net.

And in a video posted on Instagram, Bale gave fans a reminder of his spectacular strike, juggling a small football with both feet before nailing the overhead kick.

However, this wasn’t Bale’s main purpose for posting the video as it was part of his 2.6 Challenge to raise money for the NHS.

The 30-year-old called out former Welsh rugby star Sam Warburton with the caption: “My 2.6 challenge for @velindrecc NHS is complete!

“Now let’s see yours @samwarbs. Make sure you get involved with your own 2.6 challenge today or you can donate to the charity by clicking the link in my bio.”

The fundraiser has been launched on the day that runners were supposed to take part in this year’s London Marathon.

The marathon is the world’s biggest one-day fundraising event, which raised more than £66.4million for thousands of charities in 2019.

Bale has been very generous in raising money amid the coronavirus pandemic, having sent almost £1m to hospitals.

He’s sending £500,000 to NHS Wales, while another €500,000 has been sent to hospitals in and around the Madrid area.

Give COVID-19 the red card

The quicker we work together to stop coronavirus spreading, the sooner we can get back into the pubs, the gyms and stadiums and arenas to see live sport again…

  • for any medical need – for example, to visit a pharmacy or deliver essential supplies to a vulnerable person

  • to travel to and from work – but only where this is absolutely necessary

The government has also issued further detail on what we can do during lockdown.

Everyone should do what they can to stop coronavirus spreading.
