Watch as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp denies Diego Simeone handshake amid coronavirus pandemic, jokes with elbow bump instead

Jurgen Klopp opted against shaking Diego Simeone’s hand prior to their teams’ Champions League second leg on Wednesday night.

Despite the current coronavirus pandemic, the Atletico Madrid manager offered his hand to the Liverpool boss, who turned him down and instead went for a jokey elbow bump.

Covid-19 cases in the UK have risen to 480, including eight deaths, and it seems increasingly likely that domestic football will soon go behind closed doors as ‘social distancing’ measures are phased in.

Matches continue to go ahead with fans in the UK, unlike in Spain and France, where domestic sport has been taking place inside empty stadiums.

Meanwhile, in Italy, the second-worst affected country behind China, all sport has been postponed until April 3 at least, and there are fears that the Serie A season may not continue.

Liverpool will hope that a similar situation doesn’t develop in the UK, given they are well on course to win their first top-flight title in 30 years.

Prior to the manager’s pre-match handshake, Klopp was seen getting frustrated with supporters who attempted to high-five his players as they came out to warm up.

Players have been advised to reduce social interaction with supporters amid the spread of coronavirus, and the German was forced to make that clear himself as his men emerged from the tunnel at Anfield.
