Ole Gunnar Solskjaer compared to Sir Alex Ferguson by talkSPORT caller... as fellow Manchester United fan taunts rivals

Manchester United fans could not contain their emotions in the wake on Sunday’s stunning derby day defeat of Man City.

Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay netted at Old Trafford to down Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions, who are only a few games away from losing their Premier League crown to Liverpool.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got the better of Guardiola with a brilliant set-up, as his XI played as if they were the away team.

The Red Devils may have enjoyed only 27 per cent of the ball, but they sat deep to shield David de Gea and countered excellently, testing Ederson in City’s goal on six occasions.

Guardiola’s side, on the other hand, dominated possession but struggled to break down United’s fine defensive unit, managing only four shots on target.

It was one of Solskjaer’s greatest managerial performances since taking his place in the Old Trafford dugout – and he rightfully came in for a load of praise after the match.

And, for one talkSPORT caller, the praise extended so far as to compare Solskjaer to legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson!

“I’ve likened Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Alex Ferguson in a way,” began Red Devils supporter Benji on Sunday’s Final Word.

“Ole has come in for a lot of criticism for not being tactically at the level of [Jurgen] Klopp and Guardiola, but what I think Solskjaer’s got – which is very similar to Ferguson – is his man management skills and his ability to develop people as well as players.

“The biggest thing we’ve seen is with Fred; the ability was evidently there, but the confidence and the playing in the right position – and of course the addition of Bruno Fernandes and other players around him – that has been the biggest thing Ole has had in terms of a string to his bow in developing a player like Fred.

“[Nemanja] Matic also is playing out of his skin at the moment and playing some of his best football.

“But I think that little bit of man management and ability to be tactile and develop players mentally and emotionally as well as on the pitch is really key.”

Danny Kelly, hosting the Final Word with former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan, was stunned by Benji’s claim.

“Be careful when you start comparing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Sir Alex Ferguson,” he replied. “It’s probably a little early in the day for that!”

Benji was not alone in coming on talkSPORT to laud Solskjaer.

Joe, another Man United supporter, phoned in to make a joke at Simon Jordan’s expense, given he has constantly criticised and berated the Red Devils boss for being well below the required quality to manage at Old Trafford.

And he then taunted United’s rivals, insisting – ‘Here we come, we’re going again!’

Joe said: “I’ve listed to talkSPORT for so many years and for every single day, and not so long ago somebody was saying they didn’t know whether Solskjaer would be able to handle going up against these superstar managers.

“I think his name was Simon…

“I think he’s beaten Pep Guardiola… I think he’s beaten Chelsea… I think he’s beaten Spurs… I think he’s beaten Mourinho and Pochettino… I think he’s beaten Arsenal…

“He’s one of the few managers to have taken points off Liverpool this year.

“Five signings, five hits – here we come, we’re going again!

“What I’ve really enjoyed in terms of what he’s instilled in that team is pride; they are fighting now.”
