Newcastle manager Steve Bruce suggests it’s ‘inevitable’ that some Premier League games will be played behind closed doors amid the outbreak of coronavirus.
The number of UK cases has more than doubled over the last 48 hours, with 116 infections confirmed, and a widespread outbreak is now considered highly likely.

Sport has been hit hard by the COVID-19 outbreak, particularly in Italy, where domestic football and Six Nations fixtures have been postponed.
The Premier League has already banned pre-match handshakes, while several clubs have upped their hygiene levels in an attempt to lower social contact.
And it’s becoming increasingly likely that some top-flight matches will be played behind closed doors to help stop the spread.

“It’s hard to imagine,” Bruce admitted.
“They’re doing it now in Italy and it’s something we’re probably going to face.
“We all know football is a way out for everybody, but people’s lives are at stake and we’re going to have to be guided by the authorities.
“It’s starting to look inevitable.”

The British sporting calendar could be affected
Health Secretary Matt Hancock recently claimed the UK is ‘several weeks’ away from cancelling large-scale sporting events.
“Right now, it’s not appropriate to be cancelling matches here like that,” he told Good Morning Britain.
“We have to keep these things under review, but it’s something we are reluctant to do.
“It’s my job to make sure people are safe.”
