A ‘long-suffering’ Leeds United fan has complained it would be ‘so Leeds’ if coronavirus stops the club from sealing their long-awaited Premier League return.
All Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two fixtures have been suspended until April 4 at the earliest over the outbreak of COVID-19.
But it is feared the campaign may not resume at all because of the pandemic.
There have been suggestions from the top of football that the season should be declared null and void, and results and league positions reset for the start of next season.
However, on Saturday it was claimed there are plans in the works to crown Liverpool Premier League champions and hand top-flight promotion to Leeds and rivals West Brom.
For the moment, though, that is mere rumour.
While people’s health must come about football, it would be a cruel turn of events for Leeds, who are the closest they have ever been to ending their 17-year exile from the Premier League.
Marcelo Bielsa’s men currently sit top of the Championship with 11 fixtures remaining, with the Baggies one point behind in second and third place Fulham six points adrift of the automatic promotion places.
And Gary is among the Elland Road faithful who’s be heartbroken if promotion was taken away from them after such a long time coming.
“I’m a long-suffering Leeds fan and it would be just so Leeds, wouldn’t it, if we were top of the league and didn’t get promoted,” Gary told Sam Matterface and Perry Groves on talkSPORT.
“It’s unbelievable!
“There are so many permutations as well, listening to all the different ideas, but whatever you do somebody is going to be upset. There’s no real way of doing it.
“I think if they can play the games by mid-May, and cancel the Euros, even if you have to play them behind closed doors, then they’ve got a chance of finishing the season.
“I think in the end whatever the decision is, and whoever makes it, we’re going to have to live with it and that’s tough to say as a Leeds fan.
“At this stage I think it’s very wise just to take a break and see where we are in April.
“But we need some clarity, everybody needs some clarity.
“We’re either going to finish the season or we’re not, and if we don’t finish it we need to know how they’re going to calculate it.”
